Haitian music and controversy

Haitian Music and Controversy – Haitian music has been surrounded by controversy from its inception. But what exactly is controversy? According to Wikipedia, “The term controversy refers to a discussion, debate, or dispute that expresses opposing opinions on various subjects (political, scientific, literary, religious, etc.) passionately or intensely, often in writing. Today, it is used in many contexts.” So why does controversy persist as a tool in Haitian culture?

Following a well-known saying: “Empty barrels make the most noise.” This implies that some artists, writers, politicians, and others tend to use controversy as their preferred weapon. While controversy can have negative connotations, it can also be beneficial depending on how it is used. A retrospective glance at Kompa music will help us understand the positive side of controversy. The founder of Kompa, Nemours Jean Baptiste, and his colleague Webert Sicot were both masters of controversy; they knew how to wield it effectively. To the public’s eye, they appeared to be at odds, yet they were actually good friends who communicated daily.

Nemours Jean Baptiste and Webert Sicot co-founded the ensemble Nemours Jean Baptiste. To elaborate, yes, controversy can play a significant role in our music and culture, but not in the way it is often done today. A few things stand firm in our society. Upon closer inspection, from the ashes of Haiti, we are left with only football and music, despite our struggles; no one can explain this phenomenon. We must always proudly represent our national colors by supporting our athletes, our artists, and everything Haitian.

Miracles have been performed in our football, and in music, female artists are flourishing and bringing joy to many. Bedjine, Rutchelle, Fatima, Darline, Anie, Vanessa, Esther, and many others have infused fresh energy into our musical repertoire. We celebrate their presence in Haitian music, as they contribute a vital link to our culture.

Welcome to all of you, but remember that the key ingredient to healthy debate should not turn into a burning rag among you; it serves no purpose. Indeed, it is essential to maintain strong ambitions. Ambition can lead to great heights, and healthy debate should not involve tearing each other apart but rather focus on the quality of your output. Claiming to be a diva or being one can only be judged by the depth, quality, beauty, and essence of your work.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
