Haiti is set to celebrate Christmas once again, despite the challenges of another difficult year. Unfortunately, it will be another pretty somber Christmas, as joyful celebrations have been scarce on the island for quite some time. Many of us fondly recall the wonderful times we experienced during this cherished season.
Christmas holds a special place in Haitian culture, often celebrated with more enthusiasm than any other holiday. The religious devotion of most Haitians adds a unique touch to the festive decorations. Regardless of wealth, December 24th has always been the most joyous day of the year. While some will be fortunate enough to receive gifts from friends and family, many will go without. Yet, this will not diminish their happiness or their celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
People from around the globe will flock to partake in the numerous festivities that light up the night! Every nook and cranny of the island will sparkle with life. The vibrant atmosphere is irresistible, allowing even the youngest children to roam the streets freely, a rare opportunity for exploration without parental supervision.
Among the numerous attractions such as the Champs de Mars, the Bi-Centennial Place, and the National Palace, downtown Port-au-Prince stood out as the main hub of excitement. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, particularly along “Grand Rue,” this area was bustling with people of all ages eager to explore their favorite spots.
The lively shops were open, filling the air with delightful scents and a sense of anticipation. Everyone was busy browsing for the best bargains, as gifts for parents, children, and friends were in high demand. It was during these moments that my friends and I would hop on our bicycles, soaking in the charm of our town while enjoying a hot beef patty or a refreshing ice cream.
I was just a child back then, but the memories remain vivid. Haiti felt like a paradise, with its people united and harmony prevailing. Everyone was focused on their daily lives, always ready to lend a helping hand. Suddenly, our beloved island, once celebrated as “la Perle des Antilles,” has sadly transformed into “la poubelle des Antilles.” Many believed this decline was just a temporary setback, but is it really?
How did we reach this point? What went wrong? What solutions can we explore to restore peace and stability? Your thoughts on this matter would be greatly valued.
This is truly and wonderful fact that we can’t forget. Our beautiful land is destroyed by its own people.
Keep up the good work.
Peace and love by brother.
Thank you!
Very well said, Brother. Unfortunately we can only dream of a better future that seems so far away. We can only hope so far. God be with them.
Let us hope for the best, thank you.
