The excitement around Les Grenadiers, is it real?

The excitement around Les Grenadiers is real, and for good reason. For the first time in over half a century, Haiti is back on the world’s biggest soccer stage, having qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Nicaragua and topping their group in qualifying. This is only their second ever appearance at the tournament, their last coming in 1974, so expectations at home are sky-high and loaded with hope (Haitian Times, Wikipedia).

But let’s talk about the odds. Haiti’s FIFA ranking sits around 83rd as of April 2026, making them one of the lower-ranked teams in the tournament (FIFA). The Athletic, for example, projects them last out of all 48 teams in terms of chances to win it all (Instagram). Their group draw doesn’t help: Haiti will face Brazil, Morocco, and Scotland—some of the toughest competition possible (FIFA).

That said, Haiti showed serious resilience in qualifying, winning matches even when forced to play “home” games in neutral venues due to the ongoing turmoil in their country (Reuters). Duckens Nazon, their all-time leading scorer, powered them through qualifying and remains a threat up front (Olympics.com).

Realistically, Haiti are long shots to advance far. But tournaments aren’t won on paper, and there is something to be said for a team playing with nothing to lose and everything to prove. If Les Grenadiers can channel their underdog spirit and ride a wave of national pride, they might just surprise a few people. If you’re hoping for a miracle, well, stranger things have happened in football. Just don’t bet the house on it.

What do you think? Can the Haitian soccer team really pull off a miracle and come out on top? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
